Birdnest in the Ceramics Graveyard
In collaboration with Josie Rea, Sammy Hughes, and Olivia Anders

October 2024

For this project, we created a large bird's nest as a symbol of environmental decay and the encroachment of human waste on natural spaces. The nest reflected the natural world's resilience while commenting on how discarded materials can find new life.
We installed the piece in the “Ceramics Graveyard” behind the Visual Arts Building (VAB), a space filled with remnants of past projects. Exploring the area felt like modern archaeology, uncovering forgotten ceramics and sculptures.
Using only materials found around the VAB, we anchored the nest with fallen tree trunks and wove together twigs, weeds, and trash. This process mirrored the organic construction of a bird's nest and symbolized the intertwined, often fraught relationship between nature and human influence.
